Fried Oyster or more popularly known as Oh Chien among the locals is another must have dish in Penang. While eating my plate of Char Koay Teow at Lorong Selamat, I noticed many tables ordering Oh Chien as well. Hence, I thought it wouldn’t be a bad idea to give it a try. First thing first…. the waiter who came and took the order is from Midtown Cafe which is located just opposite of the famous Lorong Selamat staff at Kafe Heng Huat. So to save the trouble of walking to the other side (as well as waiting another 30 minutes for a seat), the waiter will come over to take orders from each table.
While the wait wasn’t terribly long, we were greeted with steep price of RM 20.00 for a plate of fried oyster. Certainly, my impression of this place as a tourist trap quickly sprang into my mind. But for the price paid, there was a visible amount of fresh oysters lying on top of the omelette unlike some cheaper ones in KL where I could hardly see (or taste) any oysters at all.
The omelette was nicely fried; crispy on the outer layer and chewy on the inside. I was told that the omelette is made from flour, chives and eggs fried on a flat iron wok. There was certainly an ample amount of ‘Wok Hei’ taste in the omelette.
Fresh oysters are undoubtedly the highlight here. The fried oyster at Midtown Cafe certainly lives up to its reputation (and price) with fresh and succulent oysters generously fried with the omelette.
I haven’t tried enough Oh Chien in Penang to warrant the best ones around but suffice to say, Midtown Cafe Fried Oyster didn’t disapppoint me at all. At the very least, it tasted far better than those mediocre ones in KL.
