Do you know that Penang Assam Laksa is ranked 7th in CNN’s “World’s 50 Most Delicious Foods” 2011 list? A visit to Penang won’t be complete without trying this bowl of heavenly goodness. In fact, Assam Laksa was one of the food that I had to try beside its equally famous counterpart, Char Koay Teow. When I was told that the best Assam Laksa in Penang is found at Penang Road or more specifically, Joo Hooi Cafe, I set my trusty GPS to locate this place on my second day in Penang. Not surprisingly, there was already a long queue at the back alley of Lebuh Keng Kwee where the cafe is located during noon. To make it even more challenging, I had to queue for a car park a stone throw away from the coffee shop.
Luckily, I was able to get a seat outside the coffee shop albeit next to the longkang when a couple finished their meal. A small bowl of Assam Laksa costs RM 3.50 while a big one costs RM 4.50.
True to its reputation, the Assam Laksa at Joo Hooi Cafe was simply awesome.
The soup was delightfully sourish thanks to the chunks of mackerels stewed together with lemongrass, chillies and tamarind.
Admittedly, it was slightly spicier than usual (my nose was running after having the second bowl) but the combination of cili padi, onions, cucumber, lettuce, , mint leaves and thick Hae Ko (prawn paste) hit the right note which lends to an awesome bowl of Assam Laksa.
Definitely a must try dish if you are in Penang!
